We bring an inside-out approach to Right Strategy that’s neither formulaic nor imposed. ​It’s discovered through discerning questions, disciplined listening, structured analysis, methodical decision-making, and collective choice.

In our early years, we worked with clean technology entrepreneurs to launch, capitalize, and grow their ventures. As markets shifted and opportunities emerged, we began serving a diverse array of small business owners.
 
Emerging from the Great Recession, we focused on “second stage” B2B manufacturers and service companies seeking better market intel and strategy. We increasingly focused on mid-market industrial and service firms who wanted to grow proactively, to double their business in 3-5 years.

Over time, we’ve found the most meaningful impact comes from helping leadership find, align around, and execute better growth strategies. That’s why Right Strategy is our core work today.

The “Shepherd” in our name is inspired by the 23rd Psalm. While it’s often read as a religious song, I’ve also seen it as something broader—an archetypal description of the entrepreneurial journey. 
 
The psalm traces three familiar entrepreneurial experiences:

Initial faith in guidance for the journey ahead—and belief that the work has purpose

Trials in the valley: uncertainty, vulnerability, dark nights, and the inner growth of courage and trust 
-
The realization of greater bounty, security, and peace of mind on the other side 
 
Every company has its valleys. (We certainly do.) Growth is not a straight line, and leadership often feels isolated in the most pivotal moments. But I am reminded that guidance doesn’t disappear when things get hard. Others walk alongside, stay present through difficulty, and help point the way forward.
